Meet Karen the Hedgehog: A Story of Rescue and Care

We’re excited to welcome a very special new resident to the Animal Tracks family—Karen the hedgehog.

Karen came to us from West Valley Animal Shelter after being confiscated from a situation where she wasn’t receiving proper care. Unfortunately, this is a story we see far too often, especially with small animals like hedgehogs and ferrets. Because they’re small, quiet, and undeniably cute, they’re often misunderstood—and their complex needs are overlooked.

A Sweet Soul, Now Safe

Karen is super sweet, curious, and already showing her gentle personality as she settles into her new environment. She’s now receiving the specialized care, nutrition, and enrichment she needs to thrive. Seeing her safe and comfortable is a reminder of why rescue and education are at the heart of everything we do.

The Bigger Picture: Why Hedgehogs Don’t Belong as Pets

While Karen is safe with us, her story highlights an important truth: hedgehogs make terrible animal companions.

Despite their popularity in the exotic pet trade, hedgehogs have very specific physical, environmental, and behavioral needs that are difficult to meet in a home setting. When those needs aren’t met, animals suffer—often quietly. Many end up neglected, surrendered, or confiscated, just like Karen.

Wild animals belong in the wild. Protecting them starts with resisting the urge to turn them into pets and instead supporting conservation, education, and ethical sanctuaries.

How You Can Help

By visiting Animal Tracks, learning the stories of our rescued animals, and sharing their experiences with others, you help prevent situations like Karen’s from happening again. Education is one of the most powerful tools we have to protect wildlife.

We’re grateful Karen is now safe, loved, and cared for—and we’re honored to give her the life she deserves while helping others understand why animals like her should never be taken from the wild.

Thank you for being part of the Animal Tracks community and for standing up for wildlife, one story at a time!
