How Animals Communicate Without Words: The Secret Conversations Happening All Around Us
At Animal Tracks, we have the incredible privilege of spending our days around animals—and when you spend enough time observing them, you begin to realize something fascinating:
They're always communicating.
A glance. A posture. A movement of the ears. A warning sound. A scent we may never notice. Sometimes one animal responds before a human even realizes a message was sent. Our rescued animals represent species from around the world, each with behaviors and instincts uniquely adapted for survival. Part of the mission at Animal Tracks is helping people understand these animals for who they truly are—and learning how they communicate gives us an extraordinary window into their world. Because animals don't need human words to have something to say.
Across the planet, they warn each other about predators, find mates, protect territory, maintain family bonds, locate food, and identify one another using sound, scent, movement, touch, facial expressions, and even vibrations. Some of those conversations are obvious. Others are happening on frequencies humans can't even hear. And some are so sophisticated that scientists are only now beginning to understand them.
Communication Is More Than Sound
Humans tend to associate communication with talking, but animals have developed remarkably
different ways to exchange information. Your own pets provide familiar examples. A dog's posture can change dramatically when it becomes nervous. A cat may flatten its ears when uncomfortable or slowly blink when relaxed. Animals don't need to say, "I'm scared," "Give me space," or "I trust you." Their bodies are already saying it.
Wildlife takes this communication to another level. Bees perform movements that help colony members locate food. Many mammals leave scent signals containing information other animals can detect. Birds use songs and calls for everything from courtship to territorial defense. They communicate without words.

Elephants Are Having Conversations We Can't Hear
And then there are elephants. Their conversations may literally happen beneath our hearing. Elephants produce extremely low-frequency sounds called infrasound. According to Cornell University's Elephant Listening Project, portions of elephant rumbles fall below 20 hertz—the approximate lower limit of human hearing.
Those deep calls can travel across considerable distances, allowing elephants separated by dense vegetation or open landscapes to remain connected. Bioacoustics researcher Katy Payne first recognized this phenomenon after sensing a strange vibration while observing elephants at a zoo. Her discovery helped launch decades of research into elephant communication.
Scientists now know those rumbles can help coordinate group movements and reproduction and
carry information about relationships and individuals. But recent research revealed something even more extraordinary.
Wait...Elephants May Have Names?
In 2024, researchers led by animal communication scientist Dr. Mickey Pardo published a
remarkable study in Nature Ecology & Evolution. Using machine learning to analyze African savannah elephant calls, researchers found evidence that elephants use individually specific, name-like calls when addressing one another. Then scientists tested the discovery in the wild. When elephants heard recordings of calls originally directed specifically toward them, they responded differently than when they heard calls from the same elephant intended for someone else.
In other words, an elephant may not simply be calling out: "Hey, everybody!" It may be communicating something much closer to:"Hey, YOU." That discovery offers a fascinating glimpse into just how sophisticated animal communication may be.
Why Understanding Animal Communication Matters
This science isn't only fascinating. It can also help protect wildlife. Researchers at Cornell's K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics use recordings to study animals without disturbing them. By listening to wildlife, scientists can learn about behavior, population activity, habitat use, and how human-generated noise may interfere with communication.
As Cornell bioacoustics scientist Dr. Christopher Clark explains, animals use sound to "communicate, navigate, find food, maintain social networks, and survive." Understanding those signals gives conservationists another way to understand what animals need. That connects directly with the mission of Animal Tracks.
The sanctuary's ambassador animals give visitors an opportunity not simply to look at wildlife, but to observe it. A posture changes. An ear turns. A sound is made. An animal responds. Those moments remind us that every animal experiences and interacts with its world in ways we are only beginning to understand.

Maybe We Should Listen More
For centuries, humans have asked whether animals can understand us. Science is revealing a more interesting question: How much have animals been communicating that we haven't understood?
The next time your dog changes its posture, birds suddenly begin calling outside your window, or you watch wildlife interacting with one another, pay closer attention. There may be an entire conversation happening right in front of you. No words required.
